The Computer Center of our university was established in 1975, originally under the Office of Academic Affairs. Its primary mission is to provide a computing environment for the entire university, enhancing teaching, research, and administrative efficiency. In 1986, the center was restructured into a first-level unit, following the model of National Taiwan University, and is now directly overseen by the university president.
The Computer Center has now been in operation for over 30 years. Under the visionary leadership of successive directors, the center has evolved from its early days of renting IBM 370/125 minicomputers, transitioning through mini and mainframe computers, to building the university’s high-speed network infrastructure. This network now covers teaching areas, administrative offices, research centers, staff and faculty housing, as well as student dormitories. Today, the center also provides a high-quality wireless internet environment across the entire campus.
The center has also been unwavering in its efforts to promote IT education. As early as 1981, it began offering IT training courses for administrative staff, laying the foundation for the digitization of administrative processes. In 1986, the center expanded its efforts by dedicating resources to implement practical courses on "Introduction to Computers" for first-year university students, ensuring that freshmen received essential computer skills from the outset of their academic journey.
In 1990, during the early establishment of the Taiwan Academic Network, the center took on the management and operation of the Taoyuan Regional Network Center. It also assisted educational bureaus in Taoyuan County, Kinmen County, and Lienchiang County in setting up county network centers for elementary and secondary schools. In 2002, the center was recognized by the Ministry of Education as the only outstanding unit among the twelve regional network centers in the nation based on operational performance. Between 2018 and 2023, it received the outstanding rating from the Ministry of Education five times, achieving a historic record.
In recent years, in addition to establishing comprehensive hardware facilities, the center has actively promoted policies for campus digitization and administrative e-governance. The center develops the campus information system gradually, based on factors such as the needs, importance, urgency, and feasibility of various units. It also horizontally integrates staff and student data while vertically connecting internal networks and server services, enhancing data connectivity and improving the efficiency of administrative management.
With the efforts of the center's staff, it is hoped that in addition to maintaining a rich legacy, the center will also evolve and develop various distinctive features in line with contemporary advancements.
